I have not been here a while i have been promoting and its working.
I went heavy on getting my novel reviewed. I sent it to 41 places. Local newspapers, magazines and http://www.fictionreviewer.com/
Now I can promote these reviews on my website and the reviews got published.
The internet is a maze of advertising, if you have read Donalds Trumps book 'Think big and kick arse' you will see that he is one of the greatest self-promoters in the world.
His builidings are no different than any other, yet at every oppertunity he boasts that his are the best a nd its now his trademark.
I have just sepnt a few days at the new Trump hotel in Las Vegas, its very nice but no different to the other top hotels on the strip. (Infact his is off the strip) But its promoted as the highest quality and its full.
So how can you prote your book?
1) Ebay. List it and write a review. If you spam key words in your reviews they come up on the fisrt two pages on google.
Example :'How to spot a fake Rolex' will take you to several pages that include copies of my first book.
2) Amazon get your friends to write a review, ensure key words are used. If you have a book on swimming for example, use words such as 'If I only had this book before maybe I could have beat Michael Phelps at the Olympics" When people across the world google Michael Phelps it will show on the first few pages a reference to a review on Amazon. 'How cool is that?'
3) Your website: Key word, key word key word. What ever the subject flaunt it.
4) Book signings. I have not yet done a book store: Too much competition and as a POD I cant compete price wise. I use watch stores and other events.

After a total success selling books this past weekend, let me share the BIG secret! BE THERE!!!!! Buyers need a reason to purchase your book. It's likely you would sell more books standing on a street corner than through all other methods combined. Why? Because you are the most influencial person when it comes to talking about your book. You wrote it, you published it, and you have a personal interest in it.
I shared a booth with another local author at our town's festival this past weekend. We nearly sold out! Today, I received an e-mail from a gentleman who bought my book at the festival. He said, "Thank you for convincing me to buy your book, it was well worth it." Get it?
Best wishes,
Carol

Gang,
Walpapering with reject letters is not as helpful as it could be if someone had actually read what you've created (I know, they get thousands of queries). Imagine if a professional in the business actually read your query letter and said "Looks interesting, please send manuscript for our review."
Instead the form letters say "not the right subject/genre for us to promote and sell" or similar language. Since the agents haven't seen the work there are three possibilities - it's not the right subject/genre, the query letter was not good, or they want a celebrity author for the subject.
Perserverance needed in capital letters all the way.

Mary,
Thanks for the info on iUniverse. I chaeck them out for my next book. As you alluded to I am spending way too much time on publishing and marketing (with little results) and not enough time with the fun part - writing.

Steve, my apologies. I totally missed your question.

My books are available just about everywhere, thanks to my POD publisher, iUniverse. My ISBNs are assigned through them. They list the book at Ingrams, Baker & Taylor, and, of course, the ISBNs come from Bowker too.

Barnes and Noble was a major shareholder of iUniverse (42%, at least up till the iUniverse merger with AuthorHouse recently). While my book will not be shelved at any B&N store, I do get on their website. (Only POD books selling X number of copies make it to the B&N shelves.) In fact, iUniverse places all their author's books on every website available: amazon, Border's, Books-a-Million, WalMart -- if a place sells books, they list it. I think my books are also listed on the Powell's website. They are BIG. But, again, that's only on the website. I wish people could pick up my books and open them.

The listings are all included in the package I signed up for when I published.

Had I self-published, purchased my own ISBN's, etc. I would have to register my books at the major distributors myself. Then, in order to get listed on amazon, I would have to sign up for their "Advantage" program, etc. It's a lot of work when you think you're saving money by doing it all yourself. A wee $$$ savings, but a whole lot of time spent that you could be writing your next book. And you can't get your book listed everywhere. It's a trade off.
