Stop trying to edit while you create! Editing comes later and if you try to correct wording as you write you might lose the natural talent God has given you!!!

My Egyptian novel is so big and I had so many characters that I placed a "Primary Characters" list and a "Secondary Characters" list in the front pages along with a 1-2 sentence description of each. The Primary characters are the ones with major speaking parts. The secondary list was for those with little to no speaking parts, but who played an integral part in the plot.

Then, because this book contains so much history, I also included a 17-page Glossary at the back. The Glossary was necessary for terms, people, and such that were mentioned in the book, but for reasons I could not stop the story to explain.

For example, many people don't know what a cartouche is. Rather than explain it in the story and break the readers attention to plot, I listed it in the Glossary. The glossary contains a brief history on people I mention along with artifacts and their meanings, Egyptian Gods and Goddesses, Egyptian language phrases, and so much more!

Some people tell me they read the character lists and the Glossary first before tackling the story. I still have difficulty believing I put that whole book together.

It is a good idea to create a vehicle to use that will allow you to bring a reader up to date on parts of your story that would detract from the story itself if you wrote every bit of it out. The vehicle I have found to most useful is a chapter titled Interludes.
In each of these chapters I insert several sub chapters that provide information that allows the reader to understand why the story took this turn or that.

Each time your book addresses a new point, form a new chapter or subchapter to avoid the sudden shift of information. Readers know when they come to a new chapter or subchapter the information will evolve into something a little different.
