We first meet the Ozcomert familyin Atamkoy, Turkey in 1962: Ramzi Sr., his wife, Nermin, their beautiful daughter, Erin, and son, Ramzi Jr. The scene is set for a traditional wedding when Erin is engaged to Turkel with both families’ blessing. The elder from the rival Korucu family has decided that he will have Erin marry his grandson. When Ramzi Sr. turns the elder Korucu down, it brings shame to the Korucu clan and soon several of the Ozcomert livestock are slaughtered. Fearing increased violence, the wedding date is moved up. Ramzi Jr. is awakened in the night by his cousin and aunt and soon learns the horrible truth that will haunt him for the rest of his life – his father, mother, and sister have been murdered in their sleep. Ramzi travels to Istanbul and finds work in construction as he attempts to build a life for himself. Memories of the night his family was murdered continue to disturb him, as does his paranoia that his enemies will find him and kill him as well. In England, Ramzi is studying for his engineering degree and working as a waiter. He meets Megan, a wealthy, sophisticated American. They fall in love, move to the United States, marry, and begin a family of their own. Ramzi has it all – a beautiful wife, children and a very successful business…however, he can’t cast off the nightmare of his past. Not even the love of his wife and daughters, and his place in the business community are enough to keep Ramzi from seeking to quench his thirst for revenge. This desperate need to avenge his murdered family gradually destroys everything he has worked so hard to obtain. Kaya has crafted an epic story with an intriguing plot filled with plenty of drama, tension and conflict, wonderful character development and crisp dialogue. As well, there are beautiful moments of joy, wonder, and romance. Whether in a Turkish village, London, or the U.S., he puts us right there with vivid sensory descriptions and strong, scene-setting narrative. Kaya’s talent for storytelling is evident on every page and it is easy to forget that Voice of Conscience is his first novel. Frequently, I was shaking my head in shock, laughing at his humor, and moved by a sad passage all in the same chapter. I highly recommend this riveting tale and I look forward to reading more from the author.

They have the same basic desires for happiness, love, food, and shelter that has dominated the thoughts of generations of cultures the world over. On Greenland, Eirik the Red established Eiriksfjord in 986 and later Lysufjord, four hundred miles to the north. Just 22-years later, new settlers from the homelands found all the best land already occupied and the fragile Arctic environment strained by too many people and animals on too little arable land. This first novel is a continuing, character-driven story of a company of men, women, and children whose wanderlust and yearning for adventure cause them to leave the two established settlements on Greenland and sail west, to the unexplored land later to be referred to as Vinland. Under the capable leadership of Halfdan Ingolfsson and his lieutenant, Gudbjartur Einarsson, these 315 adventuresome souls set sail from Greenland in the spring of 1008 determined to establish a new home across the western ocean. Standing in their way are uncounted numbers of indigenous people, the pre-historical ancestors of the Cree (Naskapi), Ojibwa (Anishinabeg), and Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) Indians. From the outset, these native people strenuously resist the incursion of these tall, pale-skinned invaders. Two calamitous events occur that pave the way for the hostile beginnings of an assimilation process to occur between these disparate peoples. The way is rocky and fraught with danger at every turn, but the acceptance and friendship that develops between the Northmen and the Naskapi over an affair of honor, the eventual acceptance of a young boy of the Northmen by his Haudenosaunee captors, and a scenario that seems ordained by the will of the gods, makes it all begin to fall into place, as it must for the Northmen to survive.

The guard’s Russian is hard to understand; his English is impossible. “My car stalled, I'm a tourist,” he is explaining in his bad Russian to the Mongol. The guard laughs, shows off his incisors, then pokes him in the chest with his gloved forefinger. “You play poker. You, you–capitalist spy,” he says in his best English." “My dear, dear, friend,” Sokolov started his missive, and continued with...I am sure that by the time you read my letter you will have already had a few friendly dinners with our mutual acquaintance, Burly. I know he likes to talk a lot and I apologize for his often crude manners. But let us leave him the way he is. We cannot change people, their habits. Both of us know that well. And quite often we have to forgive them their little shortcomings. So, back to the business, as the Americans say. I believe that you have already expressed an interest in my little venture, at least Burly indicated so in our recent telephone conversation. However, I have an additional little request for you. It may appear a bit odd, but please do try to understand my position. I am quite sure you know that I have never believed in seances and the like. Meaning, I can hardly believe in my own existence, never mind something ‘supernatural.’ Be it as it may, my old mother had several ‘experiences’—how should I word it—‘visual encounters,’ perhaps, with my dead brother. He died in the Great War. You cannot imagine how happy she felt, my poor, dear, old mother. So she asked me—can you imagine?—to get in contact with a reliable medium—I believe that is what they call such people—and have them try to get in touch with my dead brother to find out what he wanted to tell her. I am sure that in a big city like Paris there must be a few of those. That is why I decided to contact you for help. The problem is, he or she would have to talk to my mother directly—she will not have it any other way—and tell her the details..."
