Profile Information

About Me
I am a war baby, born in Virginia when my Dad was stationed there prior to shipping out to the South Pacific. My family comes from Texas and goes back many generations. Like most Old Texas families, we're mutts. The white boys for the most part didn't bring any girls with them, yet the family lines continue. Not hard to figure out when you consider all the gorgeous Indian and Mexican girls that were roaming around northern Mexico during that era.
I am a Vietnam era vet and had the honor of flying helicopters with the 48th Assault Helicopter Company, 10th Combat Aviation during that conflict. Best damn aviation crews that ever pulled pitch. I am fortunate to have been a tiny part of that slice of forgotten history.
I snuck into writing through the back door. During my days as a cable TV gypsy we frequently had the need for technical manuals to train our personnel. I was the only one that owned a typewriter.
I spent the next 27 years wandering around building cable TV systems, training salesmen, handling installation crews and coordinating with the boys in suits. I finally decided that I had seen enough of the world in the early 90's and opened a satellite TV company in San Antonio. I retired about three years ago when I got a message from God telling me it was time to slow down. I had a stroke. When I recovered I worked about a year and figured out that I didn't have to keep running 90 miles an hour with my hair on fire, so I quit. I still do consulting if the customer has all the money in the world and is willing to give me most of it.
I do not want to give the false impression that I am rich, I'm not, I'm just too lazy to work.
My Work
I got really serious about fiction about two years ago. My first offering is a detective novel set in South Texas. THE MEMOIRS OF BEAR:Nueces Means Nuts, has just been picked up by Mythica Publishing for release later this year. My release notice just hit the wire yesterday. It is below:
Mythica to publish US Author Tom Cooke's Debut Novel.
'THE MEMOIRS OF BEAR: Nueces Means Nuts' is a mystery novel penned by first time novelist Thomas D. Cooke. Mythica Publishing are pleased to have acquired the rights to publish this exciting work from this very talented author.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PRLog (Press Release) – Feb 10, 2009 – Mythica Publishing are delighted that U.S. author Tom Cooke is the latest addition to the list of accomplished authors signing with this new and exciting company. Tom Cooke, although this is his first novel is no stranger to the media, having worked in the Cable TV industry for many years after leaving the U.S. Army, and being the writer of a number of technical manuals during those years.

Of his novel, THE MEMOIRS OF BEAR: Nueces Means Nuts is the story of Bear Williams; half breed Apache Private Eye whose grandfather was a tribal holy man. Despite years of training by his grandfather, Bear's mystic abilities are nominal and he solves most of his cases the old fashioned way, by hard work and, in Bear’s case, good friends and dumb luck.
. The case's genesis, a deadly boring missing persons case, quickly turns into a cruel and grisly murder and a scandal of gigantic proportions. As the scandal is revealed it unwaveringly involves the cream of Texas society, a crazed preacher, an oil theft, homicide and rudeness, the last of which is regarded by some as a Capital Offense in Texas.
Despite two attempts on his life, Bear and his team of allies plod steadily forward and start to stack fact on top of fact until a preponderance of evidence starts to point to a surprising suspect. Even more surprising is how abruptly justice is meted out and by whom.
The well defined and likeable characters in this tale will draw the reader into the complex web of crime and scandal that surrounds Bear and his friends as they strike fear into the hearts of the perpetrators of the crime…eventually!

Mythica's Graeme S Houston says, "Tom's book is a superb crime-noir tale that will have readers on the edge of their seats. I'm over the moon to have added his great talents to the Mythica family of authors.".

THE MEMOIRS OF BEAR: Nueces Means Nuts will be released later this year.

Hi! :) Could you please read my blog posts and let me know what you think of my writing? I'm only sixteen, and I'm new to the whole "wanting to get published" thing. I've been told I should write a book, so I've decided to give it a shot.

Tom, enjoy every minute of it. People are always telling me they don't know how I do it, and they think it's a pretty neat life. I have to agree in spite of occasional setbacks. I work well under a little stress, so having three books to promote while writing the fourth just seems natural.

lol. I'm sure that's not the case. I sometimes leave the pic off. I have had a few folks disappointed when they actually see me in person!
